The Australian horse, Pacing Dawn, and the New Zealander, Safe Return, both drew inside post positions yesterday for the 100,000dollar International Pace at Yonkers on Friday (New Zealand time).
However, Cardigan Bay, the New Zealand horse now owned by an American syndicate, was unlucky and got the outside No. 8 position. Starting positions should not be too important in the sixth running of the mile-and-a-half classic, but Meadow Skipper was preferred to Cardigan Bay as the early favourite after drawing No. 3. Meadow Skipper, an American five-year-old, was quoted at 8 to 5 by the Yonkers track handicapper, with Cardigan Bay at 3 to 1. Pacing Lawn, which will “star” in an aquatic extravaganza in a motel swimming pool in a bid to win newspaper publicity for the race, drew the inside No. 1 post, but his Perth driver, P. Coulson, did not expect to win. “He hasn’t settled down here at all,” Coulson said. “We haven’t been able to train him the way we would like. There hasn't been enough time to get him ready for these races.” New Zealand’s Safe Return drew No. 2 at the mobile bar-
rier and his driver, J. Litten, said he thought he had a fair chdnce- “I don’t think he’s quite a top horse,” Litten said. “But if he gets a good run, he could be a little dangerous over this distance.”
Safe Return was rated a 6 to 1 chance.
Smoke Cloud, the former Sydney pacer, owned by Mr N. Simpson, of Auckland, drew No.' 5 at the barrier, and was quoted at S to 1. W. Haughton will drive him, and he may get support from the public as a result of an impressive victory last week.
Pacing Lawn is an outsider at 15 to 1.
S. Dancer, the trainer-driver of Cardigan Bay, stayed away from the draw and was left with the outside post when those who drew for the other horses successfully avoided it.
Cardigan Bay drew No. 8 last Thursday, when he faded to fifth in a free-for-all won by Meadow Skipper: The gelding has often been saddled with bad posts in Iris American career.
Barrier Practice.—Mr R. Carter will be available at Addington Raceway tomorrow between 10 a.m. and noon to give starting practice.
