RACING Shakes Moves Well In Training Sprint
Several went faster but none impressed more than the Great Easter Handicap top-weight, Shakes, in sprint tasks on a heavy track at Riccarton yesterday.
Shakes sprinted half a mile in 56 4-ssec towards the end of the training. By that time the trial grass had cut out badly, especially in the home straight.
He was ridden by his race rider, D. N. Hadfield, and was going easily half a length ahead of his stablemate, Ham (Messent).
Waverley, one of Shakes’s rivals in the Great Easter Handicap, ran the fastest halfmile of the training. With A. Telfer up, he recorded 52 4-ssec. He galloped before the track had cut out, but it was a sound effort and advanced him in favour as a light-weight prospect for the £2OOO sprint race next Monday. Waverley has run some of his best races on soft tracks and he might have conditions to his liking at the meeting. The Wingatui stablemates. Royal Estate (E. G. Low) and I Bador (F. Austin), stayed on terms throughout a mile in Imin 51sec and worked toj the post strongly. Their 54 3-ssec for the last half of a mile was good in the conditions. Royal Estate, Bador, and Polar, which have been at Riccarton for a week, have been joined there by their stablemate. Modern Imp. a winner at Beaumont on Saturday. R. N. Marsh will ride Royal Estate in the George Adams Handicap. G. T. Dobbs has been engaged for Bador in the highweight. Standout (Wildermoth) took Imin 53 3-ssec for his mile, Imin 36 2-ssec for the last seven furlongs, and 55sec for the final half-mile.

Skelton) i also ran his mile in Imin 53 3-ssec, and his last half, with Canadiana (Mrs Clutterbuck), jin 54 l-ssec. Silver Kingdom, ridden by his trainer, R. B. Barr’s team in the Papanui Handicap on Monday. D. N. Hadfield will ride Sabell, a winner at Kurow at his last start. Yatama, a last-start winner at Oamaru last month, has a wide barrier position and a start for him is not certain. Danny Kaye (Stokes) beat ’ Sir Limond (F. H. Skelton) ' and Dipmate (Edens) com- ' fortably over six furlongs in 1 Imin 23 3-ssec, the last four in 55sec. [ Other gallops:— Half - mile. Seminole (Beck) and Count de Seine .
