Americans Booed In Indonesia
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) DJAKARTA, April 12. Indonesian students shouting “Yankees go home” yesterday surrounded the American Presidential envoy, Mr Ellsworth Bunker, and the United States Ambassador, Mr Howard P. Jones. The students booed the diplomats as they left the opening session of the pro-
visional People’s Consultative Congress in Bandung.
American Embassy officials in Djakarta said the incident was “negligible” and lasted only a few moments as Bunker and Jones walked from the Congressional hall to a nearby hotel. The official news agency, Antara, termed the students “progressive” and said Indonesian security troops forestalled any serious incident. Antara said the students also shouted “destroy United States imperialism” and sang various “revolutionary” songs. Mr Bunker arrived in Indonesia last week on a “troubleshooting” mission for President Johnson to ease tensions between the United States and Indonesia. He will see President Sukarno tomorrow for this third, and possibly last, talk. While the Americans were booed in Bandung, the North Korean Premier, Kim Il Sung, was given red carpet treatment. He was whisked away from the opening session for a guided tour of the West Java mountains accompanied by President Sukarno.
