SANTIAGO, April 13.
The possibility of a commercial air link between Chile, New Zealand and Australia is being studied by the Chilean national airline, Lan-Chile, according to Lan’s vice-president (Mr Eric Campana).
He told a press conference ' yesterday that Lan officials had brought up-to-date studies of the possible construction of a modern airport at Easter Island, about 1800 miles from the Chilean coast in the Pacific Ocean. He added that Lan intends to modernise its fleet with four-engine aeroplanes capable of transporting 140 passengers oh its international lines and two-engine planes for domestic routes. Chile recently introduced two-jet French Caravelle air-
liners on its South American routes. Civil Aviation Department officials in New Zealand expressed surprise at the proposal by the Lan-Chile airline tonight. They denied any approaches had been made by the airline to New Zealand, but one official commented: “We knew they were interested in opening an airport on Easter Island, and we also knew they wished for international co-operation in expanding their operations. “But we have heard nothing concerning New Zealand yet.”
