POETRY OF SPACE
£2550 Sculpture Unveiled
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 13. “Just as scientists are interested in the exploration of space, Miss Hepworth is Interested in the poetry of space.” That was how the director of the National Art Gallery, Mr S. B. Maclennan, interpreted Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture, “Oval Form —Trezion,” today. He was speaking at the unveiling of the £2550 work, which is the art gallery’s latest acquisition. “We should not say ‘what does it represent?’ ” said Mr Maclennan. “That way we create a puzzle for ourselves. This piece represents itself.” The sculpture was an expression of the wonder of space that created a little world of its own, he said. The sculpture weighs about Bcwt, and is 57 inches at its widest point.
