Market For N.Z. Meat In Philippines
Although not a great deal of mutton or lamb was eaten in the Philippines, a rural broadcaster from Manila, Mr Bert Zamora, said yesterday he believed the Philippines could use New Zealand meat and, if it were introduced gradually, it could become popular. However, another rural broadcaster, Mr Chong-Oh-Kim, of Seoul, Korea, said he did not think New Zealand would be able to sell meat to Korea.
The two men are visiting New Zealand under F.A.O. fellowships and have been studying rural broadcasting techniques and rural extension methods in New Zealand and Australia. Australia had made considerable progress in its dealings with the Philippines, said Mr Zamora. He believed that Australian imports to the Philippines, both in primary and secondary products, had grown to about £6m annually. The Australians indulged in extensive promotion campaigns.
However, Mr Kim said Korea offered little prospect as an outlet for New Zealand’s products. Koreans ate mainly rice and did not show a liking for other cereals such
as corn, wheat or millet. Very little bread was eaten in Korea and the country did not import meat. It had built up an export industry in pig, ox and chicken products, he said. In both countries, agriculture was of prime importance, but the Philippines was developing its secondary industries, including its goldmining and timberMr Zamora was very impressed with the aerial topdressing work done in New Zealand and the advanced mechanical techniques used commonly by New Zealand farmers.
The high production 'of grass and the utilisation of grassland farming methods was most impressive, said Mr Kim.
One feature that impressed both men was the size of the average property. In Korea, the average holding was 3.5 hectares. A hectare is equivalent to about 2.4 acres. The Government allocated the land to farmers and properties could not be aggregated, Mr Kim said. The Philippines also practised very intensive farming on small properties and the average size was about three hectares, Mr Zamora said.
