Psychiatric Course
Because psychiatric patients, except in special circumstances, were no longer kept permanently in hospital, anyone working in public health met a large number of psychiatric problems, Dr. S. W. P. Mirams, director of mental health, Health Department, said at the opening of a course for medical officers of the Child Health Division yesterday. The course, which is being held at the Templeton Hospital and Training School, is the first of its kind in New Zealand for children’s medical officers. According to Dr. J. Hall, deputy director of mental health, it was decided on because children were being brought to the attention of child health officers increasingly through emotional disturbances rather than because of physical problems. The course, which is being attended by 12 medical officers from all over New Zealand, will last three days.
