RACING Aro Could Beat Depleted Challenge Stakes Field
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND. The large amount of mid-week racing since the end of last month has greatly depleted fields for the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting today
Rochdale, Fencourt, Michael and My Call have already been lost from the £l4OO Challenge Stakes and it is not certian that Red Count will contest the big weight-for-age event. Rochdale, Fencourt, My Call and Michael were competitors at Te Aroha last weekend and their connexions are reserving them for the Auckland autumn meeting, which begins on Saturday. Whether Red Count runs tomorrow or is reserved for the Easter Handicap on Saturday will be decided this morning. Aro, judged by his second behind Red Count at Te Aroha, and Lu Filou should be easily the best apart from Red Count, which will most likely drop out. When he ran at Te Aroha, Aro was having his first race after a spell. Although beaten decisively he performed with considerable credit and probably improved with the run. Lu Filou has been better known lately as a middledistance runner but has an excellent form recommendation for tomorrow in his win last month over Rio and Sobig in the North Island Challenge Stakes, weight-for-age, seven furlongs. Apart from the Challenge Stakes, the big attractions will be the £l7OO Bollard Memorial " v , er 11 furlongs and the £lOOO Stewards' Handicap, seven furlongs. Each looks open. The continuing fine weather and the prospect of a firm track has brought Wilful into favour for the Bollard Memorial and Bridoon, with No. 3 at the start, looks an excellent chance in the Stewards’ Handicap. Tasman Lad, Royal Tax, Calm Comet and Beauzami promise to be Wilful’s hardest opponents. Tasman Lad was good in the spring and after a summer spell has come to hand again quickly. Bridoon and Impressario have both been lucky in the draw for the Stewards’ Handicap, Impressario with No. 2. On the other hand, Mali Peter, one of their best-performed rivals, will have to start from near the outside. For all that, it would take only softening of the ground to make Mali Peter a favourite. Fine weather is likely to continue and the going should be excellent. Selections:-
