Freighter Blocks Ships In St. Lawrence R.
(N.Z. P. A. -Reuter—Copy rig lit)
MONTREAL, April 11. The West German freighter, Transatlantic, lay on her side in the St. Lawrence river, blocking the shipping channel for several hours today. By tonight ships were being allowed to pass along the river, carefully skirting the Transatlantic, which was aground in shallow water on the south side of the channel. The vessel was about two
miles off the north shore of the broad river. The 5607-ton Transatlantic caught fire after a collision yesterday with the 5709-ton Dutch freighter, Hermes, in Lake St. Peter, a widening of the river about 80 miles northeast of Montreal.
One man from the German ship was killed, 11 injured, and two reported missing after the collision. The Transatlantic burned for several hours.
