Refusal By Minister
“Just the usual wipe-off." said Cr. Gladys E. Boyd last evening after the Lyttelton Borough Council had received a letter from the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) refusing the council’s request for a late evening rail-car to the port on Sundays. The council wrote to the minister earlier this month suggesting that the Railways Department could provide a Sunday evening service by using one of the rail-cars which arrive at Christchurch from the south and the West coast.
“First of all 1 must point out that these rail-cars do not arrive at Christchurch until 11 5 p.m from Greymouth and 1135 p.m from Dunedin." iaid the Minister “1 feel that a service to Lyttelton at. say. 11.15 p.m. on a Sunday would be much too late in the evening to attract patronage, as would also the necessary return service
“Further, although the use of one of these rail-cars would avoid the standing by of a train crew, the costs of providing such a service would still be considerable and would certainly not be met b' the limited partonage the service would attain." the Minister said
