SPECIAL PRISON
Maximum Security (N Z.P A Reuter—Copyright/ LONDON, April 12. The Government intends to build a special escape-proof prison-within-a-prison for murderers and other dangerous criminals if the death penalty is abolished in Britain.
The plan was announced today by Sir Frank Soskice, the Home Secretary, in a letter to the prison officers’ association which had protested that abolition would leave no deterrent to any already convicted murderer against attacking a prison warder. The abolition bill is now before Parliament, and seems likely to go through. Under the present law not all murderers hang, but killing a prison warder is one of five cases which still mean execution.
Sir Frank Soskice said in his letter i was proposed to build a special wing on one of Britain’s existing prisons where dangerous longsentence prisoners—not just murderers —would go and where security precautions would be far stricter than normal.
