Sunday Films For Port
In spite of a request from a Presbyterian minister to “be strong” and show “some respect an d consideration for Sundays,” (he Lyttelton Borough Council last evening granted permission for films to be screened at the Harbour Light Theatre on Sunday evenings.
In a letter to the council, the Port Padre (Rev. .1 Tenneht) said he had read a statement by the theatre’s new manager (Mr L. Masters) that there was little for seamen to do in the port on Sunday evenings now that the. train services had been eurtai.ed.
Mr Tennent said this was not true. The Seamens Institute was open on Sunday nights and ample entertainment was provided for the men, such as television, films, table tennis, billiards, two pianos and church services for those who wished to attend.
“Surely this is sufficient for the seamen,” he said. “1 am not against progress but 1 ask you to have some respect and consideration for the Sunday. 1 trust your council will be strong and oppose the application. Keep Lyttelton in the lead to do right and we shall prosper ” In his application. Mr Masters said the Lyttelton Theatre was the only suburban theatre closed on Sundays. The theatre was at
| present dosed for renovations [and when it was re-opened with a new name at the end of the month, films would be [shown every night, he said. Cr. Wilson Dodds said he felt there was a lot of merit in having entertainment available on Sunday evenings. While some entetrainment was available for seamen, there was none for other people who wandered the streets pf the port on Sunday nights. He moved that the council grant permission providing the screenings did hot begin before 8 p.m.
si Seconding the motion, Cr. IN. D. Parratt said he was ['pleased to hear that the '[theatre was not closing for . good. "It wotdd be a particn■{larly bad thing for this port [not to have a theatre,” he •said. . [ “1 cannot see any reason why the theatre should be . open on Sundays,” said Cr. ■ Gladys E. Boyd. “We have ■ knocked other people back in ’ the past and I oppose Sunday night functions of any deI scription.” > The motion was then car--1 ried. Only Cr. Boyd voted against it ..
