Earthquake Centre 100 Miles At Sea
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. Yesterday’s earthquake which puzzled seismologists had its centre on an underwater rise known as the Chathams rise between 100 and 150 miles out from Christchurch an officer of the Seismological Observatory said today.
A feature of the earthquake, felt at 12.11 p.m., was that ■ severe tremor had not been? recorded in any area although j the earthquake was felt from I Christchurch to Wanganui. < It registered 6.5 on the Rich ; ter scale. 11 Earthquakes felt over such a wide area are usually felt 1 strongly at their origin.' ji
An earthquake of similar severity jolted Westport in 1962. causing damage to chimneys and crockery. Because yesterday’s shake had its centre at sea its effects would not be the same as if it had been centred on land. “In a built-up area it could have been dangerous,” said the observatory spokesman.
