30 MORE TAXIS
Licences For WeHington "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, April 12. Thirty additional taxis will operate in Wellington from this week. This brings the number of cabs in the city to 291. The new licences were granted by the District Transport Licensing Authority (Air Vice-Marshal M. F. Calder). Except for onC cab operating in Johnsonville the vehicles were directed, in about equal numbers, to join the three Wellington taxi companies.
Ordering cab owners to pay £2O admission to companies. Air Vice-Marshal Calder said proprietors could contest the fee.
The weekly levy to be paid to companies for use of facilities such as telephones, radio, management charges and stand hire would be the existing rate, he added. This is about £2 a week. “Unreasonably Low”
After the hearing, the chairman of the Wellington Co-operative Taxi Society (Mr M. A. Warnes) said companies considered the fee unreasonably . low. An appeal would be considered during the three-week stipulated period. He said if new owners had had to form their own company £lOO was the minimum they would need to contribute. They would also pay higher weekly levies.
