Tyre Crew Chief
RENDING about 300 punctures during the 1300mile international vintage and veteran car rally was the duty of Mr Jack Denvir, head of a tyre company’s maintenance crew with the rally. Seen above , , consulting with an entrant about a
- tyre problem, Mr Denvir often , started work at 7 a.m. and . finished after dark, but he 1 and his crew maintained ' cheerful efficiency in spite of J the heavy demands on their 5 services. Most trouble came through - wear and friction from worn i edges of beaded wheels; but
whatever the trouble nothing was a bother for the tyre crew, competitors say. Not many of those who took their troubles to Mr Denvir knew him as the New Zealand soldier who served with Marshal Tito’s partisans in Jugoslavia during the Second World War.
Be Seen See and be seen is the rule for bad visibility driving, with the emphasis on the “—be seen.” Last week, dense but misty rain made visibility very bad on the Main South road, but a surprising number of drivers switched on some lights to let themselves be seen. Never be afraid to use .your lights in daytime fog of very bad visibility. Remember: at least half the battle in staying out of trouble is being seen by the other fellow. Simple but true: if drivers always saw the other cars on the road, there would not be nearly as many accidents. Quote of the Week “In Utah ... a dual carriageway had its speed limit raised from 40 m.p.h. to 60 m.p.h., and the percentage of motorists observing the limit rose from 5 per cent to 95 per cent—and the number of accidents dropped from 10 in a year to three. In Nebraska the speed limits were raised in 28 villages on one highway, and accidents dropped by 34 per cent.”—From the “Motor.”
