No Site Yet For Detention Centre

The Justice Department had not yet been able to acquire a suitable property for the detention centre it proposed to set up in Christchurch, the Secretary of Justice (Mr J. L. Robson) said when addressing the Christchurch South Rotary Club last evening.

The centre at Parnell, Auckland, had been going for two years and was proving very worth while, he said. A property had been found for the detention centre proposed in Lower Hutt.

“We hope to find a suitable property in Christchurch and have a detention centre working here within a very short time. As a matter of fact I have been informed tonight of two properties that may be suitable in Christchurch. I shall certainly be following this up.”

The detention centres were for youths aged from 17 to 21. They were for roughs and larrikins who had not gone too far along the road to grime. The youths had to attend the centre from Friday nights to Sunday morn-

Ings over the period of sentence. Pre-Release Centre The pre-release centre in Opawa was now being renovated and the property being put into order. It was hoped to have persons at this centre within three weeks.

“I look to you people to see us through in the event of there being any trouble from the public when this centre gets under way.” Mr Robson said.

He said that pre-release centres (houses from which prisoners go to work for some months before their sentences are finished to help them to adjust themselves in re-entering society) were already established at Invercargill, Auckland, Hamilton, and Wellington.
