REFINERY FLAME
Whangarei May Lose “Aurora” "The Press” Special Service WHANGAREI, Mar. 31. Negotiations under way for establishing a chemical plant based on the Marsden Point oil refinery may rob Whangarei of its “aurora refineris” — the light from the refinery flare. The sky around Whangarei is lit up every night by the glare of the burning waste gases given off by the refinery. The flame, often rising 20 feet above the 180-foot stack, changes colour from pale yellow to deep orange as the chemical content of the gas changes. But if negotiations for the chemical industry are successful the chemicals on which the flare feeds would be extracted and used to make detergents, plastics, industrial chemicals, and drugs.
