SUCCESSFUL JOCKEY
Apprenticeship Ends The Wingatul horseman, J. R. Dowling, who ends his apprenticeship today with a New Zealand record of winning rides, may do much of his future race-riding in the North Island. It is believed that Dowling is seriously considering an offer of stable riding from a trainer with one of the biggest and most successful teams in the Manawatu district. Dowling, who headed the list of leading jockeys last season with 70 winning rides, rode his 221st winner, in an apprenticeship which was extended for an extra year, at Awapuni last Saturday week. It was fitting that Dowling’s last win as an apprentice should be on a horse prepared by the veteran Wingatui trainer, D.
P. Wilson, to whom he was indentured. Dowling rode two Wilson-trained winners on the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting. He won the Wattie Presentation Handicap on Palisade and the Adderstone Handicap on Big Smoke. Although the current season has not ended, Dowling seems to have a good chance of being the leading apprentice for the third successive year. He has already ridden 47 winners this season—only seven fewer than R. J. Skelton, who at present heads the list of leading jockeys—and his nearest rival is the Riccarton apprentice, J. A. Messent, with 20 winning rides.
