WELLINGTON, March 29.
The temporary rank of “captain (retired)” was conferred by general consent on a former member
of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade at the “Dinks” jubilee reunion dinner in Wellington. Elevated to the temporary rank was Mr J. S. Shimmin, of Christchurch, who in 10 weeks’ time will revisit the French walled town of Le Quesnoy, which the brigade liberated in the First World War.
He will present the brigade's badge to the Abbe Giloteaux, Mayor of Le Quesnoy, who was to have been guest of honour at the jubilee reunion but because of health reasons was unable to travel.
More than 500 “Dinks” at the dinner agreed that Mr Shimmin should become a “retired officer” during the duration of his Le Quesnoy visit to give the occasion “greater significance.”
