STILL NO DECISION
(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright)
ROME, March 29. Pope Paul’s special commission on birth control has ended a six-day secret meeting at a college on the outskirts of Rome. Commission sources said the 60 experts from all over the world, including priests, doctors and psychologists, were still far from reaching definite decisions. It is believed, however, that the talks have “cleared the air” and there appears to be a growing feeling that some form of contraception will eventually be recognised for Roman Catholics. Pope Paul set up the commission last summer after pledging that profound study would be given to the birth control problem. The commission has discussed the contraceptive pill, opposed by some theologians
who believe it falls within Pope Pius Xll’s ban on “permanent or temporary sterilisation,” and conventional contraceptives, hitherto banned as sinful On the grounds that they “deliberately frustrate” the marital act.
