DONKEYS FEED THE LIONS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, March 29. Seven hungry lions in a circus stranded by financial trouble in Beirut are being kept alive by being fed on one donkey each day, “The Times” said in a report from its Middle East correspondent. An English language newspaper in Beirut, the “Daily Star” has launched an appeal to raise enough money to feed the animals and also give some back pay to the men who own and perform with them. Six lions are lying in small cages outside a small stadium building as part surety for debts owed to an inter-na-tional airline and other parties. Inside the stadium another lion and five chimpanzees, four trained dogs and a white Shetland pony are held. Their owners are. for the most part, living and sleeping near them. The lions are being fed one donkey a day by the lion tamer who owns the lions.
Other animals live among a jumble of circus stools, small bicycles and other properties. The circus, which has acts from 17 countries, flew from France last month. The airline seized the circus when bills were not met. Some of the acts returned home but 15 performers and the collection of animals remain.
