IMPROVED SCHOOL TRANSPORT WANTED
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 29. An investigation into school transport will be made by the New Zealand School Committees’ Federation.
Five remits on transport matters were put before the federation’s conference in New Plymouth today and consolidated into one remit. The remits were:— That the present transport allowance of 3s a child, be increased to ss. That education boards be given the power to control transport within the criteria set down.
That regulations governing the distance a child should walk before being eligible for school transport and the final cost a child-mile should be less rigidly enforced so that latitude can be given to individual cases and for
individual circumstances, especially when hardship might result.
That more flexibility be allowed within the present rules to give more consideration to younger children in the distance they have to walk and also time of pick-up. That any child of school age be picked up by bus within a mile of its home regardless of the economics of the extra running.
