Immediate Return Trip By Holmburn
(From Our Own "Reporter)
CHATHAM ISLAND, March 28,
The Holmburn is to make an immediate return trip to the Chatham Islands to pick up cargo, which includes 460 bales of wool for the April wool sale in Christchurch. Earlier requests for an immediate return of the ship were declined by the Holm Shipping Company on the ground that a sailing was scheduled for later in April.
Local farmers, however, were concerned that their wool would miss the sale through not arriving in time to be catalogued, according to the president of Federated Farmers (Mr J, Tuanui) in an interview published last Wednesday. Late on Friday farmers received advice that the shipping company would be prepared to send the Holmburn immediately, providing there was no pressure from any quarter for the following trip to be sooner than eight weeks.
Mr Tuanui said he considered the request for such an assurance as “absolute blackmail.” Anything could happen that would require a sailing in less than eight weeks, he said.
A telegram was sent to the company advising that although the immediate return of the ship was still required, the islanders were not prepared to commit themselves on the length of time before a further sailing. A reply from the company yesterday said the Holmburn would return immediately, with a further sailing early in May —a gap of about only four weeks.
“I wish we could always give our problems like this publicity,” said Mr Tuanui. “It seems to pay.” In addition to the wool, the Holmburn will carry about 900 sheep and several hundred empty drums. There will also be some passengers. The ship, which is in Lyttelton at present will now not go to Wellington to discharge the frozen meat and fish she has' on board, but will return to the Chathams with it in the freezers. She will most likely take on further fish and meat here, and make the trip to Wei-
lington after discharging the sheep and wool and other cargo at Lyttelton.
The Holmburn is expected to sail for the Chathams on Tuesday.
