Departmental House Rents
Sir, —I would suggest that Mr Shand’s committee investigate the rentals of pool houses as well as departmental houses. Why should some government employees be forced to pay exorbitant rentals because their department is unable to provide departental accommodation? In fact, why should we have to pay more than those in normal State houses? My job forces me to be a pool tenant paying £3 13s rent weekly. My counterpart in a departmental house is paying a maximum of £2 ss. Let our prison warder, power station man, and headmaster pay £2 5s also. That way State Advances could lower exorbitant pool house rentals and put all government departments on an equal rent basis. I would like to become a home-owner, but how can one save money while in a pool house and under constant transfer? —Yours, etc., THE POOL IS LOW. March 26, 1965,
