SWIMMING Record-Breaking Spree At Junior Olympics
In a day in which the junior Olympic record book was rewritten, 32 records were established and one equalled on Saturday at the Wharenui Coronation pool.
Only 15 of the 44 event times were left unaltered, and in several events records were lowered more than once.
The best performance was that of J. Berryman, who carved 27.8 sec from the girls’ under-15 butterfly, but it became commonplace for records to be broken by more than 10 seconds. M. Hindle set the tone of the meeting by cutting 7.7 sec from the under-15 boys’ medley. But his effort was soon eclipsed by the Elmwood boy, P. Hay, who lowered the under-14 backstroke record by 11.3 sec.
C. Kinder, of Spreydon, set a new record for the under-15 boys’ backstroke in his heat, but lost the final and his record to M. Hindle of Wharenui. The medley events, in particular, saw some good swimming. Records were set in all the under-15 and under-14 events, three of them by margins greater than llsec. Relays to Wharenui
Wharenui seemed set to win all the relay events after setting records in each under--15 and under-14 swim.
But Elmwood captured the tinder-13 boys’ event after a great effort by W. Pletch. Wharenui was 10 yards in front when Pletch dived into the final lap, but with a sustained sprint he overtook the Wharenui boy to win by a touch.
J. Edmonds (Spreydon) confirmed his reputation as a breaststroke swimmer by lowering the under-15 boys’ record by 6.3 sec in his heat and by a further o.7sec in his final. His times set him in a class apart from his opponents. Titles were evenly shared in most grades but there were a few specialists. T. Shipston (Elmwood) swam only in the under-14 girls’ breaststroke, and broke the record twice to win the event comfortably.
