PRESERVING SCENERY
Plans For The Summit Road
Many organisations interested in preserving and promoting Christchurch’s scenic reserves were represented at a meeting of the Summit road Scenic Society.
A talk, illustrated by slides, on replanting and regeneration of bush areas in the summit reserves, was given by Mr H. G. Gilpin, the Christchurch City Council’s superintendent of reserves.
Mr Gilpin spoke of the success of the work done in the last 10 years in Kennedys Bush. Much native bush had regenerated, but the fear of fire, which in some areas had caused considerable loss, remained, he said.
The president of the society (Mr W. D. Douglas), outlined plans for fencing two areas of bush in the Sugar Loaf reserve, and a stretch from the south side of the Summit road to Governors Bay. The latter project would cost about £BOO, and the society hoped to provide the labour, he said. Public support was being sought.
Mr N. E. Kirk, M.P. for Lyttelton, spoke of the need to protect the reserves. The erection of pylons and television transmitting equipment by Government departments not bound by legislation should be of concern to all.
