Apprentice Rides Winners Of £986 Southland Double
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL.
The 18-year-old Gore apprentice, A. D. Hastie, rode the outsiders, Flying Saucer (Autumn Handicap) and Fuji Yama (Pressmen's Handicap) to win the double at the Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. The dividend for £1 was £986 0s 6d.
Flying Saucer, which had previously won four highweight races this season, was having her first start in an open handicap. She led all the way to win by two lengths and a half from the favourite, Golden Glen, with Summer Star finishing solidly for third, ahead of Birthright, Cobble, Beginner’s Luck, Lorastan and Eiffel Tower, which was never a prospect. Fuji Yama, which had run last in the sprint at Oamaru last Monday, made a onehorse race of the Pressmen’s Handicap. He had a break of four lengths on his field into the straight and came right away from Cassbridge, which got up in the last stride to take second place off The Wanderer. Mirror made ground for fourth, two lengths back, with a similar margin to the favourite, Tundra, which never looked like getting near the leaders. John’s Mistake, which won his first four races over country last winter, switched back to steeplechasing successfully when he gained a clear-cut win in the W. T. Hazlett Memorial Steeplechase. He jumped to the front three furlongs from home and came on to win by five lengths from John O’Groats. The meeting opened in fine weather, but rain set in later in the day. The track which was firm early, was cutting up towards the finish. There was a good attendance. Results:—
