MELV AIG WINS
Kissed As A Reward
The 10-year-old Melvaig ran through the mud and slush much better than any of the others in the Karere High-weight Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday and won running away by two and a half lengths.
His reward from his young owner, Miss 8. P. Power, was a kiss on his muddy nose.
Miss Power, a nurse at Dannevirke Hospital, was elated with the old grey’s win, his second this season, and his first from E. Ropiha’s Woodville stable.
Melvaig could have hardly avoided the flying mud, for he was last of all with a mile to run and it was fairly late before R. A. Jenkins brought him into a contending position.
Any one of five or six could have won at the furlong, where there was a line of horses across the track, but Melvaig’s challenge widest of all was easily the strongest, and it was no race in the last half-furlong. Princess Merit, always handy, beat Kurrajong by half a length for second. The favourite, Tui Marie, made a likely run to the lead early in the run home, but tired to fourth near the end. The Blenheim-trained Cinnaman made a run wide out on the turn and then weakened into the ruck.
