THREE ACTRESSES ENJOY COOKING TOUR
Three young actresses with the play “Boeing Boeing” which opens in Christchurch tonight, get a lot of fun out of cooking soirees while they are on tour.
They are Carla Cristan, who plays a French air hostess, June Campbell, who plays an American air hostess, and Jeanie Drunan, who is understudy to all four actresses in the play. The company arrived in Christchurch yesterday.
The three women, who knew each other before they came together with the play, like to share a flat with their own cooking facilities when they are touring, so they can entertain friends and take turns cooking. “Some nights we have concerts with the rest of the cast when someone sings or gives a recitation and we all discuss it,” said Miss Cristan
"There are only six of us in the company and we are a very congenial set,” said Miss Drunan. The three women find New Zealand audiences very diS-
erent from those in Australia. “We have found audiences here laugh at things which don’t get big laughs in Australia,” said Miss CampbelL Authentic Uniforms
The air hostess uniforms worn in the play are authentic. They have been supplied by different airlines. “The gowns are marvellous —each time we come on stage we get an ‘ooh’ from the audience," said Miss Cristan. “We have people coming back stage to look at them. They really are eye-catching.” Eye-catching, too, are the
clothes the actresses wear offstage. They find wherever they go people stare at them. They are all fond of coloured boots, both short and knee length, and of trouser suits. “These are fashionable in Australia at the moment, though they don’t seem to have caught on here,” said Miss Campbell. “We find they are so comfortable and practical to travel in.” Miss Drunan, the understudy, says she is the “general dogsbody” in the company, but she has played all four parts many times since the play opened in Australia more than a year ago. When “Boeing Boeing” finishes its season in New Zealand Miss Drunan will join the Old Tote Theatre to play a part in “Country Wife,” a ‘Tom Jones” comedy. Miss Cristan will go to Europe via India and will work in the theatre in many countries. She especially wants to act in Italy, as she is part Italian and speaks the language. Miss Campbell has been offered the leading role in a play with the Independent Theatre, Sydney, but is not sure whether she will accept.
