Fickle Winds Mar Local Yachting
After the strong winds and rough seas encountered by local yachtsmen from December to February, the season is drawing to a close under the most fickle and frustrating conditions. For the last month club racing has been held in near drifting conditions, the lightweather experts being in their element and the heavy-weath-er brigade suffering from lack of concentration and boredom.
The most impressive performance has come from the Christchurch club Javelin, Ra (N. L. Hey and J. E. Cullens), which, besides being the lightest of its class in the province, is well geared and set up for light weather racing. Hey and Cullens are sailing the boat well, particularly when they can beat both Wayward and Spindrift in club championship racing. It has been most noticeable that the younger yachtsmen at the clubs are showing better performances in the lighter conditions.
The Canterbury University Tournament committee held Cherub trials over the weekend. Three races were sailed at the Charteris Bay, Canterbury and Mount Pleasant clubs, and all three were won by Simba (D. Selby and W. de Nicilo). Tahuti (M. Sinclair
and J. Fletcher) was second in all three races. Results:
