TROOPS FIND 6 TONS OF MINES

DA NANG, March 28.
Three waves of United States helicopters yesterday flew nearly 2000 Vietnamese troops into battle against a Viet Cong headquarters area at Tay Ninh, 65 miles north-west of Saigon.
They uncovered one of the largest caches of Communist ammunition in the war.
Government troops flown by 97 American helicopters into a forest uncovered more than six tons of land mines, more than any other cache in memory. In three separate ammunition dumps they found more than 570 mines. The Communists offered only light groundfire to the helicopters when the first two waves flew in.
By the time the third and last wave brought in troops, the Viet Cong had disappeared. Officers were disappointed
in not finding the headquarters of the guerrillas. The sweep of the area was completed without the loss of a single Vietnamese soldier.
