GAUNTLET DEAD
Gift Horse Won £12,605 (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 26. Gauntlet, one of Auckland’s hardiest and best-known gallopers, collapsed and died this morning after a training work-out at Waiuku. He was a gift to Mr Clyde Conway from the Te Awamutu trainer, Mr Alec Cook. Gauntlet raced 92 times in seven seasons for 14 wins, four seconds, six thirds and nine fourths. Stake earnings were £12,605. Most of his racing was done on metropolitan tracks. Among his Ellerslie successes were two Christmas Handicaps and a Summer Cup. He also made several profitable trips to Trentham, where in October he won his last race, the Awatea Handicap, on protest from Maria Mitchell. His next race was to have been in the six-furlong Broadway Handicap at Ellerslie next Wednesday. He had also been entered for the Easter Handicap, in which he finished third to Final Command and Poet’s Pride in 1963.
