Language Barrier

(N.Z. Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, March 26. English was the basic problem in Maori education, the School Committees’ Federation representative on the Committee on Maori Education, Mr R. O. Metcalfe, told the federation’s national conference today. It seemed that, after nearly a century in which Maoris had competed with pakehas “on equal terms without equal background,” too much was expected too soon, he said. "The whole of the teaching profession are unanimously agreed that Maori children should have an adequate grasp of the English language by the time they reach the age of five.” However, it was thought that no far-reaching results would be evident till the children of present fifth and sixth form Maori pupils started school in 12 to 15 years.

THE BRITISH Government has rejected a proposal that immigrants should have fingerprint identification on their passports.
