Chrysathemum Disease
(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, March 26. A chrysanthemum disease apparently new to New Zealand is spreading swiftly throughout the North Island and posing a threat to market flowers gardeners. The disease, white rust (puccinia horiane) has been identified on chrysanthemums in Palmerston North, New
Plymouth, Nelson, and Auckland.
Mr D. B. Parker, horticulture inspector with the Department of Agriculture in New Plymouth, said today that the department would welcome information from persons who suspected their plants were infected. The disease could be identified in early stages by oat-meal-coloured pistuies up to i-inch in diameter on the underside of the leaves. These also produced pale yellow spots on the upper sides of the leaves.
