AIR-BORN
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SAIGON, March 25. An American army sergeant today delivered a -five-pound baby boy aboard a helicopter flying 2000 feet over guerrillainfested swamplands 18 miles south-east of Saigon. The baby and mother, now in Saigon, were both reported “doing fine.”
The helicopter, from the 57th Medical Detachment in Saigon, picked up the expectant mother, a Vietnamese, and her husband from an outlying hamlet Sergeant Charles Allen said: “About 30 minutes
after take-off she let me know the baby was arriving, So I did what I could —I delivered the baby.” Sergeant Allen, a medical specialist and a father of two children himself, said: “She didn’t seem to appear one bit frightened over having the baby. She seemed more excited about having a helicopter ride.
“But the father was plenty scared. I asked him to hold the baby while I cared for his wife, but he didn't know how.” The 57th’s new motto is now “We Deliver Anything.”
