CONTROL OF BUILDINGS
Westminster Change
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, March 24.
Queen Elizabeth yesterday agreed to give up one of her royal prerogatives—administrative control over the buildings of the Houses of Parliament.
The British Government has never been master in its own house.
From April 26, however, control will pass from the Lord Great Chamberlain, a direct representative of the sovereign, to the Speakers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, Mr Wilson announced.
The Lord Great Chamberlain was first appointed in 1133. One of his functions was to manage the Royal Palace of Westminster when it was lived in by the sovereign. Parliament in those days was a mere appendage of the Royal Court.
