Smoke, But No Fire On Roof

A crowd gathered in Hereford street shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday when three machines from the Central Fire Station were called to the Yorkshire Insurance Company’s building at 104-106 Hereford street. Hereford street, from Colombo street to Oxford terrace, was closed to traffic.

The mobile extension ladder was used to enable a fireman to inspect the roof of the building, from which smoke had been seen to rise. It was found that a hidden chimney was causing the smoke, and the light breeze was causing it to drift in heavy clouds across the street and the nearby Colombo street intersection.
