Not Worried By Cracks
Cracks which have appeared on this northern wall of a twostorey office building in Manchester street are not worrying the owners. The wall is not thought to be in any danger of collapsing.
The building adjoins the site, on the corner of Manchester and Worcester streets, of the multi-storey office block to be built for the Manchester
Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows. The brick wall is shored up. Large cracks run across it, and two continue to the Manchester street frontage of the building, which houses the State Coal Depot and other offices. On the back, or eastern wall, are other cracks.
A spokesman for the owners said yesterday that all the cracks were not new ones. The northern wall was being underpined on the boundary of the new multi-storey build-
ing site. This wall was out of plumb, and would have to be straightened before the new building was erected. “Work on the foundations for the new building has finished,” he said. “The main contractors will start on the erection of the new building from ground level this week or next, I understand. Our wall will be straightened before the adjacent wall of the new building is erected. The two walls may be hard up together or an inch or so apart. That has yet to be decided.”
