ASIAN BANK

‘Much Work Still’

The New Zealand Government was giving “careful consideration” to the report on the proposed Asian development bank, but that report left many questions unanswered, the conference was told. Mr G. L. Easterbrook-Smith, director of the development division of the Department of Industries and Commerce told the. conference much work needed to be done before the bank project could go ahead, if approved. Mr Easter brook - Smith, speaking during the debate on development of trade in the E.C.A.F.E. region, said trade liberalisation should be pursued to the “maximum extent possible.” He assured delegates that E.C.A.F.E. “could depend on New Zealand playing its full part” in activities of the region later this year. “Let us keep up the momentum which flows from Manila” (the conference at which the resolution on Asian regional economic co-operation was adopted).
