Man And Child Killed

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, March 1.

A man was killed, a three-year-old girl burned to death, and her five-year-old sister and parents seriously injured when a utility vehicle and van collided half a mile east of the Oreti river bridge on the main Invercargill-Riverton highway about 4 p.m. today.

The utility vehicle overturned and burst into flames soon after the crash. Two men on the scene of the accident managed to pull three occupants clear of the vehicle before it was well ablaze. Killed were Colin Charles MeLeish, aged 42, single, of Gladfield road, Drummond, and Robyne Stiles, aged about three, of Clinton. Her sister, Lorraine Margaret, aged five, and their parents, Ivan Vivian Stiles and Valmai Joan Stiles, aged 24, are seriously injured in Kew Hospital.

The collision occurred on a straight stretch of road a few chains east of Scott’s bend. It is believed it was raining. Mr MeLeish was thrown from his van to the side of the road. The utility vehicle overturned, trapping the Stiles family inside. Petrol spilt all around the vehicle.
