NATURAL WOOL SWEATERS

Bainin Now Used In N.Z.

Sybil Connolly, the leading Irish designer, was the first to use bainin (pronounced bawneen) a natural coloured wool, for high fashion wear. Bainin' sweaters have been knitted in the cottages of Ireland for centuries, each family using their own particular stitch.

A Wellington shop is stocking a New Zealand brand of bainin in cosy jumpers, machine knitted of wool spun directly from the natural fleece. With some of the natural grease left in the wool they are water resistant as well as very warm. The jerseys were tried and tested and in no respect found wanting by the New Zealand team in the Antarctic. They would be ideal for the lesser rigors of the ski slopes and may begin a “polar route” to fashion.
