ADDITIONAL 2d TAX

“Real Body Blow” The Government’s decision to abolish the 2d mileage tax exemption for passenger service vehicles was described by the chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. R. Smith) yesterday as “a real body blow.”

A report to yesterday’s meeting of the board from the finance committee said the board’s annual mileage tax bill would be increased by some £4360 annually. The new tax was introduced on January 1 and will add an extra £lO9O to the end of the current financial year. “What can we do?” asked Mr Smith. “This is a real body blow—£4ooo cannot be picked up in 10 minutes.”
