Japanese Art On Show
The exhibition of contemporary Japanese decorative art, now being presented at Hay’s Art Gallery (second floor) as part of the Christchurch Pan Pacific Arts Festival, is very well named. Noone entering the gallery can fail to recognise the exhibition’s country of origin or its essentially decorative quality, but what of its contemporary nature? Even a perfunctory glance will reveal that the inclusion of the word “contemporary” means much more than “recent” or “present day” and that it draws attention to the drama of ancient and exquisitelyrefined traditions confronted by the urgent and restless influences of the modern movement. How are Japanese craftsmen reacting in the face of the onslaught of the com-puter-machine age? It is seeking an answer to this and similar questions that makes this such a fascinating exhibition. Almost two-thirds of the exhibition is devoted to cera* mics, but it is rather the range and quality of these and the various influences revealed in them, rather than the sheer weight of numbers which makes this the most important part of the show.
