Sticky Problem

The University of Auckland has come to the rescue of the Auckland Central Library with the loan of a drum of glue. The glue will tide over tfie library until —or if—it gets a licence to import £25 worth of a special adhesive used in bookbinding. The licence was refused by the Customs Department on the ground that a local product was equally good. The City Librarian (Mr R. Duthie) told the City Council however, that the local product had been proved vastly inferior, and the overseas adhesive was the only one that measured up to the exacting standards required. Only eight gallons —a year’s supply—was needed. If the bindery was denied the adhesive it would have to cease work and staff would have to be dismissed. After hearing Mr Duthie’s report the council has sent a request for reconsideration to the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton).
