Miss Shipston Breaks 3 Records In One Swim

Ihe Elmwood club’s backstroke prodigy, Tui Shipston, broke three Canterbuiy records in one swim at the Canterbury under-age championships in the Centennial Pool on Saturday night.

In winning the centre 110 yd backstroke title for girls under 14, she bettered the Canterbury senior, junior and under-14 records for the distance by convincing margins. At 13 years of age she holds all the Canterbury backstroke records in the three age groups.

Miss Shipston's outstanding time of Imin 18.7 sec was a just reward for the countless hours and miles of land and water training that had gone into her preparation, for this season's major events. It was virtually a swim against the clock, for her opponents were quickly dropped and were almost an embarrassing distance behind at the finish.

The young champion’s time was s.lsec better than her existing under-14 record, 2.Bsec faster than Miss W’ Dale’s centre junior record and I.ssec inside the senior record set three years ago by Miss L. A. Norman, the former national senior champion.

But the New Zealand junior girls’ record was still 2.3 sec away from Miss Shipston’s grasp.

The Elmwood girl’s effort was the best of several record breaking swims at the first two sessions of the championships on Saturday. Brian Mustchin (Wharenui) chopped 6.4 sec from the under-14 boys’ 440 yd freestyle; Betty Braithwaite and Graeme Falk, both of Wharenui, set new marks for 55yd butterfly in the under-13 class and Ron Wilson (Spreydon) equalled the under-14 boys’ 110 yd backstroke record.

WON HANDSOMELY One of the finest efforts, however, did not earn a title or a record. Lesley Smith, the South Canterbury girl who won the South Island under-14 girls’ breaststroke title in Christchurch four weeks ago, won the Canterbury 110 yard event handsomely; her heat time was 4.lsec better than the centre under-14 record and half a second faster than Alison Mitchell’s winning time in the Canterbury junior title race in January. But as a competitor from outside the centre she could not claim either title or record.

Miss Smith went on to win the 440 yd freestyle and take second place to Miss Shipston in the 220 yd freestyle.

Another visiting swimmer to do well was Janice Williams, of Dunedin. She won two backftroke titles in the under-12 gins' class. TEN-YEAR-OLD The most successful individual was Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood), a tiny 10-year-old. She added to the glowing family record by her brothers, Michael, John and Peter, by wini. ug three under-11 titles and wffmfmmmmmrmrk

being the fastest qualifier for a fourth.

2, B. Albertson (S.) 3. Time, 1:18.7 (a Canterbury senior, junior and under-14 record)'.

Mustchin and Wilson, with two titles each, performed well in the under-14 class, and Miss Braithwaite, Sam Hollander (Spreydon) and Peter Shelton (Wharenui) displayed promise in achieving a similar feat in the under-13 group. In the under-12 class, Christine Tyson (Christchurch Ladies) and Nerolie Smith (Cheviot), each of them the sole representative of their club, were prominent frequently, while Phillip Butler (Wharenui) was the most successful boy in the under-11 class.
