Auckland Men Searching For Gold In Arrow

"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, Feb. 28.

Another chapter in the turbulent life of the Arrow river, once the richest gold bearing ri,ver in the world, has been opened by an Auckland syndicate.

The syndicate, headed by Messrs N. Appleby and L. Williams, is testing a floating gold table equipped with a suction pump in the hope of recovering gold from rivers in the district.

Since starting work recently the two men have recovered colour but, most importantly, the equipment which they designed themselves appears to be working well. It consists of a 15ft by Bft raft mounted on drums and bearing a ripple board gold table.

Spoil Is sucked from the riverbed by the suction pump and washed over the ripple table with water sucked up by a jet boat unit. A coir mat underneath the ripple bars catches any gold sucked up from the river. Results have been good, and several sites in the Arrow river below Arrowtown have been worked as the self-

propelling pump moves upriver.

The pump can move 100 tons of gravel an hour and pump 8000 gallons of water a minute.
