Chch. Marksman Wins Queen’s 50

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 28. The Christchurch rifleman, V. A. Curtis, held his place at the top of the Queen’s 50 by two points on Saturday and was chaired off the Trentham range as Queen’s Prize winner for 1965.

His moment of triumph was the culmination of four days of competitive shooting in which he fired 120 counting shots over ranges varying from 300 to 900 yards. The competition was fierce, particularly on the shooting by the top 25 over 900 yards. Curtis, who is left-handed, took the mound with 484 points, one more than second and third place-holders, R. E. Taylor, of Christchurch, and T. N. Sutherland, of Masterton.

He placed both his sighting shots in the black bulls eye for five points each and seemed to put the issue beyond doubt by following them with five more blacks and two fours.

His position was further strengthened by the collapse of Taylor and Sutherland. Sutherland rose from the mound with only three blacks

for a disappointing 41

Curtis scored 530 out of a possible 550.

The top Australian marksman was C. B. Hepworth, whose 44 gave him a total of 526 for sixth place. Results were:—
