Half-ounce Of Gold Members of the Christchurch Tramping Club took half an ounce of gold, worth about £6 5s sd, from the Pell stream on Fraser flat in the Lewis Pass area at the weekend. The money will be used for the club’s proposed new hut at Arthur’s Pass. The Pell Stream flows into the Alfred river, a tributary of the Maruia river. There were 12 in the party. Including 10 members of the club and a visitor from Auckland. Two of the party returned yesterday to pan for more gold. The Alfred river was panned for gold during the depression, and the old workings were still visible where the party prospected. Fears Groundless Fears were held for the safety of a fisherman who became separated from two companions at the mouth of the Ashburton river early on Saturday morning, but he was found fishing some distance upstream soon after police and volunteers began to search the area. Immediately the man was reported missing Ashburton policemen and volunteers, including members of the South Canterbury Sub Aqua Club, went to the scene. They had just begun the search when the man was found. Curtailed He normally spoke for two hours, said the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella), opening the Beckenham School’s jubilee celebrations at the school on Saturday. However, he would restrain himself on this occasion, as Miss M. Howard, M.P. for Sydenham, was present. “She always interjects after five minutes,” he said. Warm Day The weather in Christchurch yesterday was fine and warm. At 3 p.m. light rain fell at Harewood, but the weather in the city remained fined. The temperature at the airport at 9 a.m. was 61 degrees and by noon it had risen to 72 degrees. The temperature remained fairly constant, with a maximum temperature of 75 degrees recorded at 2 p.m. The sign on the Government Life building showed a temperature of 71 degrees at 4.15 p.m.
