Many Close Contests At B.H.S. Swimming Sports
There were many close contests but few new records set at the Christchurch Boys’ High School swimming sports yesterday. Chief interest centred on the struggle that developed between J. Hay and A. Harrow for the senior championship, and the final result was a tie. Both Harrow and Hay, who tied for the intermediate championship last year, won two events but neither came near the world-class times set by G. Stringer in 1964. The outstanding swimmer at the sports was P. Hay, who won all three under-14 events. He beat by 3.lsec the old record in the breaststroke event and came within o.2sec of the freestyle record. In the senior competition, J. Hay defeated last year’s winner and record-holder, G. Bliss, in the 100 yards breaststroke. Hay also won the butterfly event, but was second to Harrow in both the shorter freestyle races. The intermediate championship developed into a keen struggle between R. Forster, the eventual winner, and R. Sandom. Forster won all three freestyle races but was overwhelmed by Sandom in the 100 yards backstroke. M. Johnston and A. Kindred fought a keen battle for the junior championship, which was decided only in the last race. Kindred won two events to Johnston’s one, but Johnston gained three seconds and won the competition by one point, 14-13. A high standard was maintained in all diving events. L. Hudson won the open dive, but even more impressive was J. McAuliffe, who won the intermediate dive and was second in the senior. The prizes were presented by Mrs L. Bloomfield, a former member of the board of governors. Senior Events 100 Yards Freestyle.—A. Harrow 1, J. Hay 2, H. Bezar 3. Time, 59.2. 220 Yards Freestyle.—A. Harrow 1, J. Hay 2, H. Bezar 3.
