26 Cardinals Invested Without Pomp

(N.Z.PA.- Reuter—Copyright.)

VATICAN CITY, Feb. 26.

Pope Paul today cut out pomp when he invested 26 new Cardinals in a new, simplified ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Breaking with old traditions, the Pontiff came down from his throne and celebrated mass with the new Princes of the Church at the main altar.

The Pope told them he had wished to transform the rite—it replaced three previous ceremonies—and make it more religious in character. He sent a member of the papal household to deliver the famous broadbrimmed red hat to the new cardinals at their lodgings. Previously the hats, with 15 tassels on either side, were conferred by the Pope in St. Peter’s. Towards the end of the three-hour Mass the Pope slipped the ring of office on the right hand of each new cardinal. The Pope hinted that the dress and titles of cardinals may change in the future. He said this was one consideration waiting to be dealt with after the Vatican Ecumenical Council. During yesterday’s ceremony, the new cardinals did not, as in the past, prostrate themselves on the ground as a sign of utter humility. Nor did the Pope “close and open” their mouths to show they had the right to speak at consistories. . Josef, Cardinal Beran, Archbishop of Prague, was greeted with applause from the congregation when he went up to the Pope’s throne to promise loyalty and obedience. The cardinal, detained first

by the Nazis and then by the Communists, arrived last week after being barred from office for 16 years. President Maurice Yameogo of Upper Volta and other West African leaders were present to salute the elevation of West Africa’s first cardinal, Paul Zoungrana, Archbishop of Ougadougou.

The new cardinals include churchmen from Europe, the Middle East, Ceylon, South Africa, Brazil, Canada, and the United States.

The Pope began his speech in Latin, but quickly switched to Italian—“a language easier for us.”

He concluded with salutations in French, English, German, and Portuguese.
